On the surface disc golf is a simple game - throw your disc into the basket in the least amount of throws possible. It goes much deeper than that for me. It is an opportunity to meet new people, improve your community, exercise, and have fun. Being part of building or renovating a course for me is something I take pride in. Seeing people out enjoying time with friends and family on a course you’ve put hours of time building is better than a tournament win. That is what has driven me to start Hyzer Ground. Together I know we can create more opportunities for everyone to enjoy disc golf and strengthen the community.

My disc golf story. Like many kids who grew up in the 80's I was most happy being outside. I played all kinds of sports and loved anything to do with the outdoors. I didn't discover disc golf until later in life, but when I did it was a perfect fit. It had all the right components, the things I was naturally drawn to. Good community, competition, design, and nature. Like so many others, I was hooked. I started playing in a few of the Indianapolis disc golf leagues and challenged myself to get better.  After years of playing and learning from those around me, I won my first pro tournament in 2015. A few years later I was fortunate to win the 2017 Indianapolis Best of the City tournament. That particular win was special to me. The tournament is just a local club event, no prize money or big rewards. It wasn’t about that. Instead, it helped me see the value in disc golf and recognize that my win was a product of so many before me. It was a combination of the great golfers that taught me the game, the people that always put their energy into improving the courses, and it was the disc golf community that made it fun!  Around that same time, I became very interested in course design. I began volunteering time and developed an apprenticeship in course design under Jerry Suiter. Jerry has designed many of the great courses throughout Indiana and I learned a lot from him. I love my time on the disc golf course and it’s been such a positive outlet in my life. I’m excited to be a part of Hyzer Ground disc golf and hope to continue that tradition of giving back!
